State Challenge - Science Sandpit

Sponsored by the Queensland Government on behalf of the:

  • Science division, Department of Science, Information Technology and Innovation

Create a Cutting Edge Concept - The Science Sandpit!

Description

Queensland Government Open Data Portal provides a range of data sets, including Environmental and Natural Resources Sciences. Play with one or more of these data sets to improve government Service Delivery through one or more of the following:

  1. Information Discoverability and Delivery (visualisation, education and promotion)
  2. Community Disaster/Risk Awareness (preparedness and response)
  3. Community and Stakeholder Engagement (communication, interaction, multicultural and special needs)

Output(s)

The challenge may be presented via, but is not restricted to, one or more of the following delivery options:

  1. Application
  2. Website
  3. Visual Art [e.g. installation, video, sculpture/craft, photography, painting/sketch]
  4. Game(s) [single or multi-player]
  5. Written or Musical piece [e.g. poetry/prose, theatre, musical score]

Puzzle Box

We would like GovHackers to be guided/ inspired by one or more of the following topics and suggested datasets*:

  1. Deep Wide Ocean [e.g. surfing, recreational boating safety, fishing etc.]
    • Wave data, fish data (various), water quality data
  2. A Place to Breathe [e.g. relevant to outdoor exercisers, asthma or allergy sufferers etc.]
    • Air quality data, industrial emissions data, vegetation data
  3. Park and Ride [e.g. explore Qld national parks by bushwalking or mountain biking etc.]
    • Consistent climate scenarios, bike trails, vegetation and biodiversity data, fire management zones
  4. The Good Earth [e.g. environmental impact assessments; good land management; conservation etc.]
    • Soils data (various), water quality data, air quality data, WildNet data, biodiversity planning assessments and aquatic conservation assessments, modelled potential habitat
  5. Drive on the Wild Side [e.g. wildlife spotting; lakes/waterfalls; biodiversity and ecosystem discovery etc.]
    • WildNet data, Qld Wildlife data API, Herbrecs, wetland mapping, other biodiversity data, water quality data, regional ecosystems data
  6. Get Down and Dirty [e.g. impacts to the Great Barrier Reef (GBR); visualisation of areas with risk of erosion, deposition, salinisation, acidification, or landslides etc.]
    • Soils data; erosion data; GBR linked data [water quality, land use, commercial fishing data etc.]
  7. Visionary Voyager – manipulate, elucidate, innovate and communicate using a pre-determined mystery dataset
    • Reef Catchment Modelling Results – pollutant loads for fine sediments and dissolved inorganic nitrogen - 1986 to 2014

Datasets

Our challenges encourage use of multiple, widely and openly available datasets as long as their licensing terms permit.

To be eligible to win GovHackers must include at least one science data set from Open Data Portal but are not limited to the suggested datasets under each challenge topic under the "Puzzle Box" heading above.

Note that all Science data sets are tagged with "govhack 2016" on the Queensland Government Open Data Portal.

All suggested datasets and web services for inclusion in this Govhack challenge are published and available via the Queensland Government Open Data Portal .

HINT! Below is the username and password for SILO datasets published at Open Data Portal if you need it:

Username: workshop1
Password: boxthorn

Useful search terms: govhack 2016, The Science Sandpit, science, wave, air quality, environment, climate, wildlife, bike trails, biodiversity, vegetation, reef, water quality, fishing, boating.

User/audience/target market

General public; government agencies; educational institutes; private enterprise and others

Assessment and Scoring

Submissions will be assessed on how well GovHackers meet the following criteria:

  1. Originality
  2. The relevance to the team nominated category definition
  3. Specific prize eligibility criteria detailed (if any) e.g. data use, team criteria
  4. Consistency with contest purposes including social value
  5. Quality and design (including standards compliance)
  6. Usability (including documentation and ease of use)
  7. How beneficial the concept would potentially be to Queenslanders
