A Healthy Queensland

Background

Every Queenslander needs our health services at one time or another. The evidence of Queenslanders needing our services is the fact that we are the most searched for website on data.qld.gov.au. We at Queensland Health, need to ensure that everyone has easy access to our services no matter where they are living in the State. Whether you are in a remote area or living in Brisbane, our services are accessible to you on line. With the growth rate of Queensland expanding as housing pressures in southern states are bringing people west and north, now more than ever, the issues of providing health care are more complex. With population growth comes a number of risk factors.

The Challenge

Prevention is better than cure. Not only does prevention help Queensland’s economy, but our society generally by having a healthy population. By embracing a healthy Queensland, we need to look at innovative ways to communicate risk factors to Queenslanders already living here and looking to move, but Queenslanders who are thinking of moving here from another State. Perhaps drilling down on data from location, population and current Queensland Health services such as location of hospitals, medical centres, pathology labs, x-ray and medical transportation such as ambulance or flying doctor whilst factoring in indigenous outcomes.

For example:

  • Identify areas of increased population growth and how this might affect the delivery of Queensland Health services taking into consideration the factors listed briefly above;
  • Identify high risk areas due to location such as remote or regional areas with limited access to Queensland Health services such as hospitals, medical transportation;
  • Having identified areas of increased population growth, map out what this will look like and how it will impact Queensland Health services over the next 5 and 10 years;
  • Map out areas of interchangeable population growth/decline due to movements in the population from economic losses such as mining areas or coastal regions due to cyclones and the demand for Queensland Health services over the next 5 to 10 years.
  • Possible solutions would be finding where there is no data but population exists.

Our challenge encourages your team to use of a multiple of widely and openly available datasets.
