Commonwealth Games Challenge

Accessibility to services for non-english speakers/international tourists - visitors generally

Background

Non-english speakers such as interstate indigenous representatives and international tourists often require an ability to access Queensland Government services. Anything from catching a train from the airport, through to getting around the Gold Coast and Brisbane. Visitors often want to know what is ‘on’ in our beautiful cities in addition to the Commonwealth Games events. Perhaps visitors are staying for two weeks and attending 3 events and want to explore our wonderful region. The Commonwealth Games will provide for an influx of tourists who may not speak English as a first language and need to know how to get around and what other things are on. This will include understanding our indigenous heritage.

The Challenge

To provide access to services for non-english speakers and international visitors with a translation app in their language of choice. Not limited to international languages such as French, but also our local ‘commonwealth neighbours’ such as Singhalese, Pidgeon English, Polynesian and interstate indigenous languages.

This challenge is about empowering visitors where ever they may be from with the ability to get the information they require quickly and easily. This information is the ‘information’ that will get them around to various Commonwealth Games events anywhere from Cairns and Townsville for the Basketball through to Brisbane and the Gold Coast where the opening and closing ceremonies will take place.

You need to find a solution to help our visitors get around from any airport from Cairns, Townsville, Brisbane and the Gold Coast helping our visitors to find out how to catch a train, bus or tram service to get to a hotel, to then get around to the various venues then perhaps see a tourist attraction such as a local indigenous dance group or the Hinterland or head to Brisbane to go GOMA.

Or perhaps, they might simply type in the venue name such as the Nathan Velodrome and the app locates them and lets the visitors know what bus or train service is available, times etc in their own language.

It might not even be an app. This challenge is only limited by your imagination!

This challenge encourages use of multiple, widely and openly available datasets as long as their licensing terms permit.

User/audience/target market

Visitors from interstate and overseas who want an interactive easy to use app in their own language or a translator app they can speak into or type into.

GovHackers will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Originality and innovation
  • Relevance to theme
  • Consistency with contest purposes including social value
  • Quality and design (including standards and compliance)
  • Usability (including documentation and ease of use)
