Courting Justice Challenge

Background

Queensland's courts have played an integral role in administering justice in Queensland. Each court sits independently of the Queensland Department of Justice and Attorney-General and Queensland Government. We recognise that this can create a challenge for people to easily identify where they need to go in order to access not only the actual courts, but the services they provide. Access to services such as drug rehabilitation services, family counselling and mediation.

The Challenge

Someone like yourself or someone you know will need to access a court or the services provided. The court system is often met with trepidation and can been seen to be shrouded in mystery. This may be via a matter that they are involved in such as a simple litigation matter which may be heard in Queensland Civil Administrative Tribunal or a traffic matter in the Magistrates Court. For family related matters, people may need to access the family court. Accessing the services provided by the courts and the courts themselves, their locations, parking nearby can be fraught with uncertainty for users. The courts want the people of Queensland to be able to easily identify what they are after and locate that service. Your team needs to develop an easy to use app that covers all regions of Queensland for people to be able to access any services that they are after. This may mean that a simple tool for people to enter information into a search criteria such as “traffic fine court”.

For example:

  • Identify the different courts and their jurisdictions of law, this also includes access for Indigenous people to the Murri Court.
  • Identify the circuit court and where they are located around regional and remote Queensland;
  • Identify statistical data to understand what types of crime and types of court matters in each court across all jurisdictions occur eg: break and enter, family court, traffic matters etc.
  • Identify and breakdown the most sought after services provided by the courts such as Justice of the Peace, drug rehabilitation or any other services the courts provide by local, regional and remote;
  • Having identified where each court is located and the services that each court provides, also outline where people can easily have access to street parking or public transport so that they can get to the court they want;
  • Provide an easy to use JP/Commission of Declaration register so that people may simply input their location and they will be provided with 5 or so JP or Commission of Declaration officer options, this also includes access to court services such as drug rehabilitation;

Our challenge encourages your team to use of a multiple of widely and openly available datasets.
