My Place by Awesomely Cool
The winner of the 2019 Queensland Government Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Languages State GovHack challenge My Place, by Awesomely Cool, proposes a digital way of learning, understanding and preserving at-risk languages.
This project proposes mixing augmented reality, virtual reality, gamification and open data into a simple, interactive and visual app. This app connects to GPS to allow users to explore indigenous languages in their local area.
The Data
My Place proposed the use of the following datasets:
- State Library of Queensland - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages word lists
- AUSTLANG dataset 001
The Benefits
Many Australian indigenous languages are endangered. The My Place app provides a simple easy to use solution for people to learn their local indigenous language. This helps to preserve local culture and provides users with historical knowledge of their surroundings.
